Solid State Theory (FYST25/EXTP90/NAFY017)

Spring, LP4, 7.5 HP

All information is found on Canvas

Update 17 March 2020: The course VT2020 will be given via Web tools, where Canvas is the central point of communication. In order to get access, you need to be registered. If you are not registered yet, please do a late registration immediately. PhD students shall send me an email to announce participation.

General information

Aim of the course
The course shall provide a better understanding of central concepts in solid state physics and
their relation to the basic theories of quantum mechanics and electrodynamics. The students
shall learn how these concepts can be applied to model physical effects quantitatively.
Particular emphasis is given towards topics relevant to ongoing research in solid state physics and nanoscience in Lund.

Content

Detailed description with reading instructions

Course structure
The lectures shall give an overview over the material but also provide time for discussion and the study of small problems. Beside these classroom activities, self-study as well as the work on weekly problems are essential for the course. The weekly problems shall be handed in by groups of two or three.

Expected Pre-Knowledge
The course is scheduled as a continuation course to solid state physics
FYSC13  which is similar to other introductory courses at the technical faculty in Lund. Thus, it is supposed that the student has some background in solid state physics (at least 5 ECTS credit points) and is familiar with most of the following topics Furthermore a solid background in quantum mechanics (at least 15 ECTS credit points in total) including "advanded" courses such as FYSN17 or FMFN01 is required. Basic  knowledge of electrodynamics and thermodynamics/statistical physics  is recommended (about 5 ECTS credit points in each) . Some material on the concepts required can be found here for self-study.
[ 60 ECTS points, or Swedish hp, correspond to one year of full-time studies]
